When the latest technology hits store shelves in the form of a new gadget (the very first iPod comes to mind), do you rush out to buy it or do you wait for the next generation? Early adopters of technology tend to purchase the newest gadgets before anyone else has had a chance to review them. Cautious consumers, however, tend to wait for manufacturers to work all the bugs out before they buy their devices.

Image via Wikipedia

The Early Adopters

Without early adopters, companies wouldn’t have the money and research that they need to improve their products. Obviously, these consumers help companies by purchasing the newest (and often most expensive) gadgets.

What do they get in return?

Disadvantages

First generation products usually have bugs that effect performance

The newest devices often cost more than those made later

Since fewer people use these gadgets, early adopters don’t have much support outside of services from the manufacturer

Advantages

They get to explore the newest technologies

Early adopters often enjoy telling people about the good and bad points of new devices

Since they buy products first, they get to influence how later generations will perform

The Cautious Consumers

If you waited a couple of years before buying an iPod or you still haven’t made up your mind about ereaders, then you probably fall into the “cautious consumer” category. That’s a good place for most people. Cautious consumers usually spend less money on high-priced gadgets. When they do spend their money, they get reliable devices that manufacturers and users have already tested.

Really, it comes down to personality (and how much money you have to spend, of course). Are there any disadvantages to living like a cautious consumer?

While technology continues to become more prevalent within our society, there are still many people who are not familiar with the latest trends and gadgets. However, since touch screen technology and innovative mobile devices have become mainstream, people who are not as technologically proficient as others are coming out to try the different products being released.

Unfortunately, it is overwhelming to try to become familiar with something like a smart phone or tablet PC with little to no experience with the technology. Below are a couple of ways to learn how to operate your new device before reaching the point of pulling your hair out.

Ask Questions at the Time of Purchase

For the most part, smart phones and tablets are found in technology-based retail outlets. Due to this fact, you will generally be in a store with people who are extremely familiar with the device you are buying. Simply going the route of asking for some tutorials or trying out a display model to become more proficient with the basic features is the perfect way to gain a solid foundation of how to work the tablets or smart phones.

Don’t Neglect the Manual

As tedious as reading some manuals is, do not neglect doing so during times of confusion. While manuals can be difficult to understand occasionally due to the jargon that is commonly used, there are pictures, and at times, easy-to-follow numbered steps that help users understand how to perform a specific task on their new mobile device.

No matter how well you take care of your iPod, one of these days it will freeze. You’ll either stare at a blank screen or a screen that won’t budge from the last song you played. Luckily, you don’t have to take your iPod to a repair shop, where they will absolutely make fun of you behind your back for that huge catalog of Wham! songs you’ve listened to 100 times in the past week. Instead, you can reboot the device without the help of a professional.

Image via CrunchBase

First Things First

Before you restart your iPod, make sure that you haven’t unintentionally engaged the lock button. If you find a padlock icon on the iPod’s screen, then turn off the lock function and your device should start to work again.

Early Generation iPods

If you have an early generation iPod (first, second or third gen), then you can reboot the device by following these easy steps

Plug the iPod into a wall outlet or your computer

Hold down the Menu and Play buttons at the same time until the device reboots

If the iPod reboots successfully, then you will see an Apple icon on the screen.

Clickwheel Generations

If you have a fourth gen or one of the later clickwheel generations, then you will take a slightly different approach to rebooting the device.

Plug the iPod into your computer or wall outlet

Hold down the Menu and Select buttons at the same time

When you see the Apple icon, you know that the device has restarted successfully.
